...wait for it--
Not many words needed in this series. I do know I could not get enough of these. So cute, so silent, until Mama and Papa came back. There were four baby swallows in the nest of mud and feathers!! The photos were taken on America's Memorial Day weekend. Bud and I went back 6 days later and you wouldn't believe how big they had become! I took pictures of our return visit also. Will share them to show you the difference at another time. This has been an incredible visual for me. One I won't soon forget! If you recall, I posted about the parents building their nests at the same location just a few weeks ago....the post is here.

ReplyDeleteI've always been too late to witness the hatchlings before this year!! It was thrilling.
DeleteReally great pictures! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDelete...thank YOU Rian.
DeleteThese are amazing! And I can't say enough about them! When their mouths are shut, they take up almost their whole body, they are ALL mouth!! And then the feeding, you got it ALL! they give their mom a good target, don't they? WELL DONE!!
ReplyDelete...thanks Ginny.
DeleteSo nice to get them at two different stages of settlement on those pristine roof beams. I'm sure your latest visit will document their tremendous growth rate.
ReplyDelete...it was exciting for me to see this happening....never before...always too late in the season and coming upon a deserted nest. Luckily this year, we got to see it all.
DeleteThey have the sweetest little faces! Great captures.
ReplyDelete...don't they? Thanks Pat
DeleteAnni, the barn swallow nest never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDoug...I hope my comment I left for you today went through. I tried three times and gave up...then, went to a previous post and filled out the comment form there. Hope you don't miss it. Thanks!!
DeleteThose young Swallows just seem to shoot up overnight on their insect rich diet. In another day or two they will.be sat on.the edge of that nest. Can't wait to see your pictures then Anni. L
ReplyDelete...that's what I told Bud "We should fed our kids insects"...we woulda had an empty nest a lot sooner. [kidding!!!]

DeleteWe have a similar Swallow here in Australia that nests in garages, etc and I used to hope and pray every summer as a kid that one would nest on our house - and they often did! So these photos bring back many happy memories, thank you for sharing them :)

DeleteYou have to love them. That´s just the way it is. :) Great shots of the babies.
ReplyDelete...thank you. Yes, you just have to love 'em.
DeleteGreat photos! Funny how they're silent as church mouses. Until Mom shows up with food. Then it's mouths wide open, to be fed. :-)
ReplyDeleteno kidding!!! So right, so right.
DeleteI love those little faces over the edge of the nest.
ReplyDelete...thanks Rebecca
DeleteAwesome photos!! Those are some hungry mouths. And such doting parents. So lovely to see this.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Texas fines you for doing "playback" on your phone. There must not be any restrictions here because our bird instructor (who teaches at LSU) was doing it, though she did say to play the bird songs sparingly.
...doting parents indeed. Thanks Gail.
DeleteAnni, thank you for the WSJ link...although I couldn't read the entire article, it led me to search other opinions on playback. There certainly are many cons to playback that I hadn't thought of before, and I thank you for educating me. Have a great day.
ReplyDelete....thanks...just hope I didn't upset you with my opinions.
DeleteA super visual sequence of the Swallows growing up. Well done Anni.
ReplyDelete...thank you Frank
DeleteLove these action photos. This is probably one of the few times, one can sit and really get an understanding of the bird. Lovely set here.
ReplyDelete...thanks Chris
DeleteThese are wonderful! We had cliff swallows every year that wanted to build on our back patio here in South Texas. We let them a couple of years, because I love to watch the babies, but they are SO messy!!! This brought back fond memories, thank you :)
ReplyDelete...and thank YOU for linking up this week.
DeleteHere are indeed weining words needed. So cute this little swallows. Wonderful to see how the little beaks wide open as soon as possible when food comes :-) Really enjoy.
