Estero Llano State Park & Back Home...

There won't be too much narration along with these photos today. The pictures were taken within the last couple of weeks. From the southwestern border of Texas about seven miles from the Rio Grande [river] and the border of Old Mexico. Then, other birds were found on Mustang Island at the Salt Flats of Charlie's Pasture, about 1/2 mile from the Port's Ship Channel.

Here we go...

This is a female Vermilion Flycatcher. And, personally, I think the female is much prettier than the male. Of course most would disagree with me. We never did see the male. But she graced our walk with color!! This Flycatcher is a first for me...

Next, one species I always search for when I'm walking the boardwalks of the Salt Flats. They're not easy to spot along the way, but if you're lucky enough to catch the movement on the ground, it's sure to be the Horned Lark!! I found a male and a female [or immature male]. Look closely on the male [the last photo of the two images] and you can 'picture the horns' above its eyes on the top of the head...

Lastly, as we returned to the trail beginning cotillion we spotted a Lark Sparrow and a Lincoln's Sparrow

Oh, and I received my Cornell Labratory Member's free 2016 Calender in the mail this last week!  Neat bird photos, as always.

  3. The Vermilion Flycatcher has such a feminine air and expression, Anni. She is pretty. I always liked to see Hormed Larks and listen to their song, too. I'm not familiar with the sparrows. I miss all the Texas birds.

  10. Hello Anni!:) These are all lovely captures. The slender female Vermilion Flycatcher is a beauty. I'm only just beginning to realize how many different species of Flycatcher there are., and it is great to see a different species of Lark, as I have only seen the Crested Lark here.

  13. Hello Anni. Wow that Vermilion Flycatcher is really something else. The field guides struggle to capture that shade of red you show us. Good to see your Horned Lark as we get the same species here as a scarcity from Europe but we call it Shore Lark. Hope you stayed clear of that storm this weekend. Stay safe..

    Are you on this picture?
