§ It's All About Color...

...breeding colors that is! [And seasonal beak growth on white pelican - Pelicans of both sexes develop a bump in breeding season, and it's not on their bellies. The lump forms on top of the bird's beak, and falls off after the birds have mated and laid eggs. Its function is not entirely known, but is thought to be a display of fertility.]

§ In Search of A Rare Bird...

Note to Christina in Sweden...I could not leave a comment on your blog...so, thanks for taking time to link in last week!...never found the rare bird tho! A reported Ruff was seen at South Pasture Boardwalk. This area is all revamped and finally open again to the public after repair work was done thru the help of FEMA fund after Hurricane Harvey nearly 5 years ago. Many people told me about seeing a Ruff in the salt flats, but I never saw it. Oh well.
I did see these tho while perusing the new trail and climbing the observation tower...

§ Along the Bay...

From last week's post, Ken at Rosyfinch Ramblings, suggested that my duck I mistakingly ID'd was a hybrid duck. And after his explanation, I totally agree! Thank you.
I would also like to make note of the loss of the "world's" queen!! Her passing has definitely put a somber note in my household. I grew up only knowing one Queen...at that is the late Elizabeth II. My condolences to all in the British Commonwealth.

§ Port Aransas Birding ....

I guess I'm making up for only have the one duck last week. This week, while on the islands, I saw very few birds. Even tho most of the birding hotspots had vacancy signs up. LOL. By that I mean, very little activity witnessed. I think most of the local year 'round birds are busy nesting or raising young. And the migrants have left our area until their return trip in the Fall. In Port Aransas I saw these among others...

STILT SANDPIPER
[I think! It had signs of yellow green legs, but very muddy, and the rufous crown and fading tell-tale rusty spot with the white eye line, and its larger size...if I am mistaken, please correct me!]
