§ Warblers of Spring...

It's the 4th of July weekend in America. For the last several days our area of the Coastal Bend has been inundated with heavy downpours. So, again, I sit home and read mostly...waiting for it to dry out. We won't be doing much of celebrating other than our annual grilled hot dogs, potato salad and icy COORS!! Of course there won't be much sleeping until past midnight on the 4th because of the fireworks. I will watch "the show" from our garage window to keep dry and mosquito free! Here are some images from my Spring months' archives of this year; all warblers.  And those that bird and try to get photos of them, know that it's a challenge of nerves and patience.  I really hope to get out soon, even tho the birds will be scarce other than the resident year 'round birds....

§ Ice Storm Update and Birds from the Past

The thought of not getting a post done this week crossed my mind.  For days, as most know by either my personal blog, or the news of the state of Texas, we had near catastrophic blackouts for days. Normal outdoor temps for this time of year is 70's for a high and 50's for low. Hear that? Historically we get...No freezing, no ice, no snow! But history changed its course this past week! We got mostly ice, but a skiff of snow too. No heat at our house [2 1/2 days of indoor temps of 42 degrees F and below at night]. Our house is all electric, so no warm meals either. Generator engines froze up around the neighborhood. I did NOT go anywhere but to bed to keep warm. Thursday I did get out to get groceries since we lost so much from the freezer thawing. Get to the store, and NOTHING on the shelves but more or less foods rejected by other shoppers. I managed to get two cases of bottled water. I timed it well. They were giving each customer two cases each to keep others from hoarding.

And I choose the most colorful, bright and cheerful photos I can find!!! Just to raise the doom and gloom we experienced this week. All I can say now, is: "It's bound to get better!"

§ This Month in South Texas...

It's been a wet week. But, we didn't get the full strength of Tropical Storm Beta afterall. We did get angry seas [I went out Sunday early to check the surf...see some of my photos taken. here if you'd like]. By Monday morning, the winds picked up and rain fell. Only a couple days of coastal flooding. We here in Corpus Christi, let out a deep sigh of relief!! Even, tho, we all who live along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts know the season isn't over yet. Here are some more September birds seen in my neck of the woods...

§ On The Island....

Quiet week! Even our 52nd anniversary went by without much celebrating...Covid-19 kept us from going out to dine [this is the first time we didn't paint the town in all those years! Definitely a year for the memory book in so many ways, for so many of us.] As far as birding goes this week, it's been kinda quiet. I've done my habitual walking in the morning, but to change the pace, AND SCENERY, I've chosen different areas to traverse and tally my steps. Some days, I just walked downtown...the concrete jungle, and there I'm lucky to see a grackle or two along the streets/sidewalks. A few days I ventured to a city park, and on Sunday I drove to the islands. On the islands, this is what I spotted in different areas of the fishing village, Port Aransas and Mustang Island on that day...

§ Castro Sanctuary and Other Hotspots...

There is a small section of land that has been designated by the Castro [no relation to Fidel that I know of] family, named after their daughter, Linda, who was an avid birder.  The land with a small fresh water pond was donated to the town of Rockport, Texas.  Here, at different times of year several species of migrant and resident birds are seen...
