Warblers are returning to South Texas!! Just recently I spotted a Black Throated Green Warbler in the grass near Port Aranass Birding Center---
---and in two different parks, a Black and White Warbler---
---while walking along the paved path at Sunset Lake I chanced upon a feeding frenzy with Sanderlings [I think!]. As I approached them for a closer photo they flew off---
On another birding trek through the thick woods to a couple of ponds near the Nueces River, I spotted a bright yellow beauty! Another warbler. This time 'round the gorgeous yellow Prothonotary Warbler. Ask me to pronounce it. LOL I couldn't! I'd probably stumble and stutter something that may come close, but I just KNOW it'd be the wrong pronunciation. Ummmmm, let me put it this way: pro THON a tary or if you prefer...listen here

TRIVIA:
Nonbreeding Sanderlings often stay on the wintering grounds through the summer.
The male Black-throated Green Warbler sings persistently during the breeding season. One individual was observed singing 466 songs in one hour.
Black and White Warblers' genus name means 'moss-plucking' [Mniotilta varia] a reference to its habit of probing bark and moss for insects.
The name "Prothonotary" refers to clerks in the Roman Catholic church, whose robes were bright yellow. Also, the Prothonotary Warbler is only one of two warblers that nest in cavities of trees and such [like a woodpecker].
ADDENDUM: Monday, April 7th....I'm leaving on a birding trip today...will return to blogging when we return home.

The green warbler looks more like a yellow warbler to me!! Well...I mean his color looks more yellow than green. But the black and white WOW!!!! I have never seen such a bird and he is amazing!!! I'm guessing this one is a male...do the females look the same but duller? This bird should be called The Zebra Bird!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ginny. The 'green' looks more yellow....but if the light hits the back feathers just right, it IS an olive green more so. I think both female and male of the B&W are too similar to tell them apart.
DeleteNow you've got me-- what is the other cavity-nesting warbler? We are still waiting for a warbler invasion here in inland south Florida. I'll not forget witnessing a spring fallout of warblers, tanagers, orioles etc in Corpus Christi along the causeway as it reached Mustang Island. They were all over the grass just like your Black-throated Blue, but so exhausted that you could walk right up to them.

DeleteYou lucky, lucky girl! I've been wanting to see the black and white warbler for a few weeks. You got some great shots of him. The stripes are so striking on this bird. Lovely one also of the prothonotary warbler. Our bird instructor told us that birders who get excited about warblers are more serious birders than the rest. I think that's true!
