Warblers are returning to South Texas!! Just recently I spotted a Black Throated Green Warbler in the grass near Port Aranass Birding Center---

---and in two different parks, a Black and White Warbler---

---while walking along the paved path at Sunset Lake I chanced upon a feeding frenzy with Sanderlings [I think!]. As I approached them for a closer photo they flew off---

On another birding trek through the thick woods to a couple of ponds near the Nueces River, I spotted a bright yellow beauty! Another warbler. This time 'round the gorgeous yellow Prothonotary Warbler. Ask me to pronounce it. LOL I couldn't! I'd probably stumble and stutter something that may come close, but I just KNOW it'd be the wrong pronunciation. Ummmmm, let me put it this way: pro THON a tary or if you prefer...listen here

BLACK THROATED GREEN WARBLER
photo taken: Port Arnasas Birding Center - Port Aransas, Texas
habitat range: Black-throated Green Warbler
BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER
photos taken: Hans Suter Refuge & Blucher Park - Corpus Christi, Texas
habitat range: Black & White Warbler
SANDERLINGS
photos taken: Sunset Lake, Portland, Texas
habitat range: Sanderling
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER
photo taken: Pollywog Ponds, Calallen, Texas
habitat range: Prothonotary Warbler
TRIVIA:
Nonbreeding Sanderlings often stay on the wintering grounds through the summer.
The male Black-throated Green Warbler sings persistently during the breeding season. One individual was observed singing 466 songs in one hour.
Black and White Warblers' genus name means 'moss-plucking' [Mniotilta varia] a reference to its habit of probing bark and moss for insects.
The name "Prothonotary" refers to clerks in the Roman Catholic church, whose robes were bright yellow. Also, the Prothonotary Warbler is only one of two warblers that nest in cavities of trees and such [like a woodpecker].
ADDENDUM: Monday, April 7th....I'm leaving on a birding trip today...will return to blogging when we return home.
Next week's post is pre-scheduled!!
Obviously I won't be able to respond to anyone after I post this newly added section....
Now, it's time to share your birding experiences:

The green warbler looks more like a yellow warbler to me!! Well...I mean his color looks more yellow than green. But the black and white WOW!!!! I have never seen such a bird and he is amazing!!! I'm guessing this one is a male...do the females look the same but duller? This bird should be called The Zebra Bird!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ginny. The 'green' looks more yellow....but if the light hits the back feathers just right, it IS an olive green more so. I think both female and male of the B&W are too similar to tell them apart.
DeleteNow you've got me-- what is the other cavity-nesting warbler? We are still waiting for a warbler invasion here in inland south Florida. I'll not forget witnessing a spring fallout of warblers, tanagers, orioles etc in Corpus Christi along the causeway as it reached Mustang Island. They were all over the grass just like your Black-throated Blue, but so exhausted that you could walk right up to them.
ReplyDelete...I think it's the Lucy's Warbler.
Deletethe b&w is so pretty! well, all warblers are. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ms. T....all warblers are pretty. Some more so than others...but still....
DeleteThe black and white warbler is very pretty. It's always interesting to see birds we don't have here. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDelete...as I enjoy YOUR different birds that we don't see here....makes the meme all the more worth while in my opinion.
DeleteI love the bright colors of birds, but there is something about that black and white warbler. Amaging!
ReplyDeleteI think that was supposed to say amazing, can't spell today. lol
DeleteWow Anni, 3 birds I have never seen before. Lovely Green warbler, the B&W one is stunning and that cute little Prothonotary is a doll! Excellent captures!
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen.
DeleteBrilliant photos! Such bright and colorful birds. I really think that B&W Warbler is so striking.
ReplyDelete...glad to know you enjoyed the photos this week.

Ginny called it a 'zebra warbler' too!!!

ReplyDeletelovely to see these birds.
They are new for me!
well then...happy that you could see some of the little ones passing through TX this time of year.
Deletelove your set of spring birds. They are all wonderful. The last little warbler I don´t think I have seen before. So cute.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know my link was broken. I was wondering why. It was the better one this week. :)
...and I'm glad you corrected the broken link!! Thanks.
DeleteWhat an exciting time it must be now Anni. All those colourful warblers passing through Texas. You have pictured perhaps two of my favourite warblers, the spectacular Black and White and the Prothonotary. Yes I had my teeth in when I tried to say it out loud.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting today. It's great to meet up with birders from all over.
LOL....that poli-grip helps.
DeleteThe black and white warblers are lovely. This is such a wonderful time of year with all different birds arriving back after such a long winter.
ReplyDelete...it's kinda slow here, being the time of year they're just now beginning to arrive. So, obviously they realize somehow it's still a bit too cold up north yet.
DeleteI saw your link at Eileen so wanted to have a look :-)
ReplyDeleteDelicious and beautiful birds with beautiful colors. All birds other than we have in the Netherlands :-)
Greetings, Helma
...thanks Helma, glad to meet you.
DeleteWow! The black and white warbler is stunning!
ReplyDelete...they are that [and cute too]
DeleteProthonotary Warbler is a fine capture. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDelete...thanks Doug
DeleteLove those warblers!
ReplyDelete...me too, thanks Pat.
DeleteHi Anni, love those birds. I'm just stopping by to say how delightful your blog is. Thanks so much for sharing. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris

...thanks Chris. I'll stop by when I can.
DeleteYou lucky, lucky girl! I've been wanting to see the black and white warbler for a few weeks. You got some great shots of him. The stripes are so striking on this bird. Lovely one also of the prothonotary warbler. Our bird instructor told us that birders who get excited about warblers are more serious birders than the rest. I think that's true!
ReplyDeletethey're each lovely photographs, and my very favourites are the first, and the final photos
ReplyDeleteThe black and white warbler looks like he has escaped from prison. A real jail bird.
ReplyDeleteLove that black & white warbler! We used to love the birds that were around our farmhouse when we lived in Texas...painted buntings and scissor-tail flycathcers were extra special since we didn't have those back east.
ReplyDeletevery nice photos Anni...
ReplyDeleteyours sincerely
