At Bazemore Park [in Calallen, Texas], I spent a few hours watching birds on the two ponds and along the Nueces River banks. There were ducks, Avocets, Black Necked Stilts, young:[?] meadowlark, Widgeons, Grackles. Two particular species captured my attention. Several Hooded Mergansers were swimming, enjoying the company of each other. A few females and an estimated half dozen males. While taking photos of them, I spied a male Belted Kingfisher perched on a rotted tree stump that was jutting out of the water...it flew off to the back side of me [behind me was a smaller pond]. And, naturally, I was a bit distracted from the mergansers and followed the kingfisher with my lens. I took photos of it at the water's edge, on a tree branch as it dived into the pond and back up on its sentinel branch. By the time I completed my series of photos, I turned back to the larger pond, and the mergansers had left!

Afterward, I returned to the car and drove the circular drive. I never got out of the car but found a flooded field from the previous rains received. It was filled with movement...all Killdeer. I also spied a MAMA AND YEARLING WHITE TAILED DEER, the yearling pulled my heartstrings!! [if you'd like to view the deer photos, click here]. In the wooded area, I noticed a woodpecker atop a dead tree. A hawk was also spotted on the power lines high above and one hawk soaring in silence above me. I stopped at the hawkwatch platform and found two Northern Cardinals...male and female at the drip system. Winter months can be quiet, but many times several different birds can be seen on one outing - especially the day after a storm.
...this one I am not sure. I don't think it's a sparrow...the bill is too long and too thin. I need some expert advice on the ID. Is it a young or 'freshly molted' Meadowlark, in its winter plumage? I'm guessing meadowlark, but dunno if it's Eastern or Western. I'm gonna say it's Eastern since they're more common in my area. lol

ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas and thanks for hosting :)
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas! I think my favorite of all these is the very impressive crest of the Kingfisher. The mergansers are outstanding. And look at those pesky grackles! They are certainly sleek bully birds! I have seen one snatch a worm right out of another bird's beak.
ReplyDeleteLoved them all, but the avocets and mergansers were certainly special. Do have a very Merry Christmas and enjoy your time with your son.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the Kingfisher...such an usual bird! And I am still scratching my head over my birds this week. I saw some Hooded Mergansers and took a couple of pics of them but today I am showing the big flock...guess they are Mergansers too! Merry Christmas sweet lady! Hugs, Diane

ReplyDeleteSorry I'm late Anni. We've been out visiting for Xmas but now I'm home to catch up while Sue watches the soaps. You smashed me with your list of goodies again amnd I am oh so jealous that you should get pictures like that of Belted Kingfisher. Sure you are right about meadowlark but sorry, can't help with east or west.

Sending Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan to my Dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, love the Hawk!
I recently photographed Eastern Meadowlarks here. Comparing those photos to your mystery bird, I think it is a Meadowlark, probably Eastern. It is something about the set of the eyes ... if that makes any sense to you.
It will be a couple of weeks before I post my Meadowlark photos, as I have a Sapsucker this week and a Dove already scheduled for next week.
Best Wishes for the New Year!
Lea
Happy New Year Ani -- I'll be here if I can (we'll be away on a boat trip) to join in for the first sharing party of the year. I know you enjoyed Christmas with your family; wonderful your son could be there.
ReplyDeleteLoved all these birds. I too saw a field full of "injured" kildeer this past weekend -- I always want to tell them not to worry; I wouldn't harm them or their babies for anything.... but still they run around trying to get me to go somewhere else.
