Think Green...

Along the boardwalk last week, while Bud and I were awed with the incoming migrant ducks in Port Aransa Texas Birding Center, a lone Green Heron, a year 'round resident in South Texas, flew into my side view as I had my binoculars focused on the the sky. And, it perched just in front of us. So I was naturally a bit distracted by its beauty. By the time I got my camera aimed and primed its dark bluish green head plumage had collapsed back to the 'normal' state. Some day I will get a photo of its raised plumage!! Some day. With the morning sun just barely above the horizon, the lighting was perfect for capturing the colors ---

habitat range: Green Heron

TRIVIA: The Green Heron is one of the world’s few tool-using bird species. It creates fishing lures with bread crusts, insects, earthworms, twigs, feathers, and other objects, dropping them on the surface of the water to entice small fish. The oldest Green Heron on record was 7 years, 11 months old.

    1. They're hard to find....not only elusive and sticking to the dense grasses/trees...if they ARE out in the open, they move so stealthily, it's easy to miss 'em.

  12. Anni, he's beautiful, whether his feathers are fluffed out or not! One flew in front of me yesterday as I was observing snowy egrets, then quickly hid for cover when he sensed my presence. They are such beautiful little herons. You got some terrific images of this little guy!

Btw, love your header image of the binoculars!

  14. Hi, Anni-- sorry I have had limited Internet connection for the past week out West and then had to cope with the backlog upon returning to Florida. Yes, I love to catch that Green Heron with its neck extended and crest raised, but it seems not to hold that pose for very long. They are such shape-shifters!
