Kingsville Texas and King's Ranch...

On an overcast day Bud and I drove to Kingsville, Texas...home of the world renowned King's Ranch!! [known for the size of the ranch land AND the breeding of Longhorn cattle and Santa Gertrudis breed...not to mention the triple crown winner, Assault bygones ago!!] While at Dick Kleberg park we saw a few birds, mockingbirds, black bellied whistling ducks, flycatchers, couch's kingbird to be exact...but no Green Jays that I had hoped to see. Then, a short distance away from the park, King's Ranch Visitor's Center where we spotted the longhorn and gertrudis cattle...plus Wild Turkeys

  2. Your "bonus" photo page brought back memories of our visit to Kings Ranch many years ago when we lived in Dallas. Loved the turkeys and the beautiful kingbird.

  10. I have driven by King's Ranch on several occasions. Looks like a great area for birding. Love the turkey peeking out from behind the tree. I wasn't familiar with Couch's Kingbird so had to go check out my Western Kingbird and compare them to make sure I identified mine correctly. Mine has white along the tail, so I'm guessing my Western is correct. You made me do research this early Sunday Morning. That's a good thing. :)

  15. We went to the King Ranch and took a tour, but I don't remember seeing a single bird! We did see green jays when we stayed somewhere in the Valley (no pictures).... wanted to thank you for the ID help with my Pacific Loons (maybe I already did on the previous post -- anyway, I gave you credit and thanks in a footnote on that post. And I will mention it again next time I have a bird to link.... it has been too hot to even think about going out birding. I am kind of a wuss!

  16. Hi again! We have Eastern Kingbirds here, and they also have the white edge around the tail. I think Mockingbirds are the same everywhere! We actually had a pair claim my feeders this past spring! Very annoying... they'd chase away the little birds! It was a disappointing enough spring without that drama! I would love to see a Green Jay... Again, thanks for sharing!
