Winter Texans....

This past week it's been a miserable week for me to be outdoors! High winds, near freezing temps in the middle of the day [icy conditions on bridges for driving], so I stayed home for the most part. I still have to laugh at myself, being that I grew up in the Colorado foothills; living there for over 50 years, and when it gets to be wintry here in South Texas, I am chilled to the bone. I know a lot of that has to do with heavy humidity, but still, I've become a weakling when the cold snaps linger for days. I went out only a couple of days. Yes, one morning it was a mild 70° [F] and I walked a trail in shorts and t-shirt. By the time I got my 3 miles' walk completed and back to the car the temp had dropped some 20+° and I was happy to get back in the car with the heater. Another day I drove to Humble Channel in search of a rare gull that was spotted...the Glaucous...but never saw it. Too windy to stand on the coast without being blown over. Another pair of female ducks were reported at Port Aransas, but I never got a chance to get there. Harlequin Ducks. Needless to say, not many 'special' birds seen; the usual winter residents. But, I will share some photos taken:

  1. You've really had the weather swings this past week. I have lots of family in the Dallas area and always keep up and it's even been icy there. Hope it is better this coming week. It's been hot here but we can't complain about sunny days. I love the Green Jay...what a beauty! And we finally saw some Snowy Egrets this week. Happy weekend, Diane

  2. Dear Annie,
here in the east of Austria it is always very stormy at the moment, too, and today there was every kind of weather from nice sunshine to icy snowfall during a hike. Luckily I can offer you bird photos from our last holiday in Italy, the weather was a lot better then, and this time there's not just "the usual" to see, but some pheasants and waterfowl, for example. The birds, which are "the usual winter residents" for you, are definitely special for me and I am happy about each and every one of them!
All the best and happy weekend

  4. love the lesser and that sweet little dove at the end. I can NOT take cold weather any more. I wonder if aging has anything to do with it... NOT that YOU are aging LOL

  5. Hello,
I guess living in a warmer climate and state for so many years, the cold weather can feel awful. Maryland gets a mix, of cold and hot weather. The weather here can change daily.
Awesome collection of birds and photos. I think the Redhead is one of my favorites. but I loved them all. Thanks for hosting. Have a happy weekend.

  7. You got some great photos, especially the rascally Gull and the beautiful Jay. I used to want the house temps to be about 7 degrees lower than we keep it now. But now I freeze most of the time. They said it comes with age, and thinning skin. But you are more youthful and active than me, so may not have that problem.

  8. Another beautiful collection of bird pictures! Although it was with freezing temperatures, these pictures are worth the efforts. I like all the bird pictures, but my favourite is green jay. It looks unique with colours.
    Have a great weekend!

  10. Such great shots Anni. The Green Jay is my favorite today. I like that new camera of yours! It really is the humidity where we live. I'm the same but yet I can remember being in Vermont in 30 degree weather and being very comfortable without so much as a light jacket. It's totally different. Stay warm!

  11. What wonderful bird pictures! We've had a few warm days in Virginia but I still wear corduroy pants and long-sleeve shirts because I get chilly easily.

  13. I feel for you Anni. we've had similar cold and windy weather for weeks but i do think that getting older means feeling the cold more. i think that seeing inca doves and green jays would be compensation enough for me if i missed the glaucous gull. I guess i hadn't realised a glaucous would be a rare for you, but then it is a northern species.

Enjoy your sunday and thanks for the link.

  14. I suspect that part of the reason you feel the cold more now is that you don't have the right clothing. Many things in life might bother me, cold weather is not one of them.

  15. Hello Anni, My daughter just left after having lunch, with me, I then swept the balcony in very pleasant weather conditions, although it has been a little windy, it's not cold. I feel for you, especially as you would rather be birding. Your Park images are all delightful. from the Northern Cardinal to the Green Jay, which is very beautiful. and also the Inca Dove , which is a bird I don't see often enough on nature blogs, it's a lovely dove.
Thank you for hosting, and have a good Sunday.
