§ Inca Inca Dove

The area at the park I traversed the other day was very populated at the time I was there!! With resident birds and even deer. While I was on the platform viewing the area ONE dove surprised me with a close encounter. And he sang to me before leaving. Once I noticed it was so nearby, I switched my camera to video mode. Some of my visitors at Hootin' Anni's blog have seen this already...

Then, I took MORE photos of the clan [bevy] of doves in the trees...

§ Park Birds...

For most of the summer months, we have experienced drought and extreme heat. The latter part of August, we finally received some beneficial rainfall, but the steam bath is still here! Over the weekend it's predicted to begin with heavy storming and perhaps flooding in the area. It's either feast or famine! Anyway, I took a couple of short drives to a couple of local parks and spotted these [the ducks and stilt seen here are across the street from one of the parks]; in a flooded sorghum field...

§ Winter Texans....

This past week it's been a miserable week for me to be outdoors! High winds, near freezing temps in the middle of the day [icy conditions on bridges for driving], so I stayed home for the most part. I still have to laugh at myself, being that I grew up in the Colorado foothills; living there for over 50 years, and when it gets to be wintry here in South Texas, I am chilled to the bone. I know a lot of that has to do with heavy humidity, but still, I've become a weakling when the cold snaps linger for days. I went out only a couple of days. Yes, one morning it was a mild 70° [F] and I walked a trail in shorts and t-shirt. By the time I got my 3 miles' walk completed and back to the car the temp had dropped some 20+° and I was happy to get back in the car with the heater. Another day I drove to Humble Channel in search of a rare gull that was spotted...the Glaucous...but never saw it. Too windy to stand on the coast without being blown over. Another pair of female ducks were reported at Port Aransas, but I never got a chance to get there. Harlequin Ducks. Needless to say, not many 'special' birds seen; the usual winter residents. But, I will share some photos taken:

§ This Week...

On Tuesday morning, early, this week, I took a short road trip to Wright's Pond between Calallen and Orange Grove, Texas. Only a hop, skip, and a jump from Corpus Christi, as the crow flies. As you head west, once you pass Calallen, the promise of Texas' famous hill country teases the senses. Nearing Orange Grove, I take a cutoff of what I call the Devil's Road...it's actually another highway but the highway number is 666. I don't have to drive too far on this road as the cutoff to the ranch is nearby. The pond is on a private ranch, but I can pull off the highway and take a few steps from the car to view through the fencing. On this particular day, there were three species of birds on or near the water...

Anhingas, Wood Storks, and Great Egrets

I then retraced my route going back to Calallen, and stopping at Bazemore Park. My intention was searching and hoping to find the fawn with its parents, but as I drove down the steep hill, only one doe crossed in front of the car. No other deer were seen while I was there. But, when I got out to do some walking along the river, I spotted these birds and photographed them...

Green Heron, Great Kiskadee, Inca Dove, and a well camouflaged White Winged Dove.  I also saw, Golden Fronted Woodpeckers, Grackles, Mockingbirds, Sparrows, and a couple of young cottontail rabbits.
