Birding in Early Spring...

With school's Spring Break this week, and College Spring Break next week, I'm sticking close to home. These photos shared today are from the previous week and this past Sunday...before vacation times for the educators/students.  The GB Heron was seen along Ocean Drive on the  road to the Naval Base.  Of course the falcon nest platform is along the island highway.  There are two platforms, about 5 miles apart, but this one is the only one ever used.   The black arrow shows where it's located, and then using the zoom.  The Glaucous Gull is a vagrant in these parts of the coast...I have ONE MORE rare gull seen that I will share next week I hope to remember.  The white morphed reddish egret seems to be coming into breeding plumage.  And the two scaups are at the pond at a local park.

  2. Your photos are great, dear Anni - including those of the Day of the Duck :-)
The pictures of GB Heron with its prey are particularly great - I have never managed to take shots like this before. Today you get to see unspectacular city ducks and a pigeon from me ;-)
    Happy weekend!

  4. You could show your amazing archived pictures any time and I would be happy! (But I know you'd hate it if you had to stick close to home every week!).... it's a smart thing to do at Spring-break time though -- here in this part of the Gulf Coast as well). The white morph Reddish Egret is beautiful and the fact that you can ID it is proof that you are a published professional!! Thanks for sharing the beauty and the knowledge -- and for hosting.

  10. You keeping out of harm's way Anni? Ha, ha. But I know where you're coming from as I tend to be very careful where I go when kids and families are on the loose. nice to see the close ups of the Lesser Scaup and also the rarity that is Glaucous Gull. The latter must be very rare down in Texas, even more so than up here in NW England where i haven't seen one for years. Enjoy your Sunday, and thanks for he link up.

  11. Hello Anni,
I would keep my distance from the Spring Breakers. You captured some wonderful birds. Love the Egret and Heron, great sighting of the Falcon. Congrats on the rare gull sighting. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day and a happy new week!

  12. wow! Don´t think I even read the name APLOMADO FALCON before. A stunning bird indeed. And your zoom worked hard to get it. I never had such a lens I think. Not for that distance. Your other birds, however stunning, disappears behind the APLOMADO FALCON.
